Before you start: track inventory in Shopify
A low stock badge needs a real number to count down from. In your Shopify admin, open the product, and in each variant's Inventory section tick Track quantity and enter the stock you have. Products that don't track quantity can't show a low stock badge, because Shopify has no count for them.
Step by step with Clearlabel
- Install Clearlabel, click “Turn on” and Save in the theme editor.
- Open the Low stock label (it's created for you, switched off) or add it from the gallery. Its text is “Only {{stock}} left”, and {{stock}} becomes the real number.
- Set the threshold, for example “stock is 5 or fewer”. Products above it won't show the badge.
- Choose where it sits on the image and its colours, check the live preview on your products, and save.
The count adds up the stock of every tracked variant that's in stock, and comes from the inventory Shopify writes into your page, so it's current each time the page loads.
Keep it honest
- Show the real count. Fake scarcity that never changes gets noticed, and consumer law in the EU and UK bans false claims that stock or time is limited.
- Pick a threshold that means something for your store: “Only 3 left” is useful on a handmade item, not on a product you restock daily.
- Pair it with a Sold out label so the badge changes, rather than disappears, when the last one sells.
Common problems
- The badge never shows: Track quantity is off, or stock is above your threshold.
- It disappears at zero: that's on purpose. Sold-out products never count as low stock; show your Sold out label instead.
- The number looks wrong: the count is for the whole product (all in-stock variants), not the size a shopper picked.
